Un importante reto para la ganadería contemporánea es la necesidad de aumentar en forma amplia los recursos pecuarios de la población mundial. Este problema es de naturaleza urgente, debiéndose aumentar la producción de animales para abasto, para satisfacer la demanda en crecimiento de proteína animal. Los modelos bio-económicos que integran la biología animal con la administración de las empresas rurales, son más utilizados para estudiar sistemas de producción animal sustentable. En México, solo el 10% de los sistemas económicos de producción de alimento es de ganado caprino. En relación al número de cabezas representa el 15% del hato nacional; es de importancia mencionar que la producción de carne de caprino no está acorde con el crecimiento de la población del país. El problema del déficit de productos cárnicos caprinos, es de tan alarmante magnitud, que para satisfacer este déficit es necesario un aumento total de todos los recursos y entre ellos, el de la población animal y su productividad. Por esta razón, es apropiado y conveniente examinar las posibilidades que ofrecen la explotación de las cabras y su valor potencial en el abastecimiento de proteína animal.
